Home > Automatic Whole-House Filter Systems

Automatic filters - sometimes referred to as "Whole-House" filters - are simply tanks which contain media that has properties designed to treat specific water conditions. They are periodically "backwashed" to refresh the media bed in order to release particles it has trapped, or to prevent the media itself from becoming riddled with water channels to insure proper contact time with the water and its contaminants.

Types of media include:

  • Activated Carbon
  • Anthracite
  • Calcite
  • Filter Ag
  • Filter Sand
  • Birm
  • Manganese Greensand
  • Corosex F

- to name a few. These media are sometimes mixed with other media to treat multiple water issues. But by far, the best method for treating multiple water issues is to use one filter for one contaminant. For example; while an activated carbon filter will work as stated on "Taste & Odor", if that odor is caused by hydrogen sulfide, an iron filter would work more efficiently. Even though the activated carbon will reduce the amount of odor in the water, the iron or "greensand" filter will eliminate it (when properly sized).

Terminator™ Certain types of auto-filter can use mulitiple stages to treat water problems such as the Terminator iron filters. They make use of an air injection valve which draws in air as water passes through your well's water pipe when the well it running. The oxygen from the air then mixes with the incoming water to oxidize the iron for easy removal by the final stage iron filter. The oxygenated water is then stored in your water pressure tank. Upon demand, the water moves to the second stage of the Terminator system which is the air-mix tank. This tank releases the air which the injector drew in and also releases any sulfur gas in the water. Finally, the water passes through an auto-backwashing filter with a special blend of media which removes the oxygenated iron particles. The Terminator systems use no chemicals or salt to provide highly effective iron treatment up to 10ppm of iron/manganese and 4ppm of sulfur.

Terminator™ systems are available online in 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 cubic/foot capacities starting at $730 Delivered

Birm Filter - Birm filters are another stand-alone type of iron treatment system. Birm filter media will remove dissolved iron and manganese from well water. It acts as a catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and the iron compounds. It helps to convert dissolved iron into ferric iron which is easily filterable. The Birm media is then periodically backwashed to remove the now solid iron particles. Birm filter media has a long life and is inexpensive. But its conditions for operation are restricted to water with pH levels over 6.8 and a dissolved oxygen content of at least 15% of the iron content. If your water has a sulfur smell to it, the Birm media will not work for you.

Greensand Filter - Or Manganese/greensand filter. This iron removal filter system will take care of soluble iron along with hydrogen sulfide gas, manganese, arsenic and radium in your water. The media acts as a catalyst in the oxidation/reduction reaction of iron and manganese. This media requires regeneration much like a water softener with salt, but uses a strong oxidizer called potassium permanganate. Greensand filters have been in use for decades and are effective over a wide range of pH levels; 6.2 - 8.5.

Calcite Filter - Balanced pH for water is considered between 6.8 and 7.8. Anything less than 6.8 can result in acidic water which is capable of eating away at copper pipes and metal faucet fixtures. It can also cause staining on sinks, toilets and bathtubs because of the metal leeched from the water pipes as the water passes through. A simple method of raising your water's pH is running it through a Calcite filter. The Calcite will slowly dissolve and raise your water's pH. A special media tank with an opening for adding media (called a dome hole) is included with the Calcite filter. Calcite (calcium carbonate) is inexpensive. The drawback to a Calcite filter is the increase in hardness to the water. A softener is recommended downline of this acid neutralizer.

This Calcite filter is controlled by a Fleck 5600 automatic backwashing contorl valve. The tank has a handy dome-hole feature to add the acid neutralizer when needed without the need to remove the conroller.

Activated Carbon Filter - Filtering water with activated carbon provides numerous benefits. It can remove chlorine from "city water" and improve taste and odor for private well water. For people concerned with the sodium levels in water treated with a common water softener, an activated carbon filter downline of the softener also removes the sodium. Activated carbon media can also drastically reduce fluoride, water color with suspended solids in it, and dissolved metals. Activated carbon will lose efficiency if exposed to water which contains petroleum products.

This 1.0 cu/ft activated carbon filter can vastly improve the quality of your water for as little as $551 Delivered
